Balaba Nature Camp

off the Kartong Highway, Near Gunjur, the Gambia

Mobile in the Gambia: Lamin on (00220) 9919012 UK contact: Andrew & Lynda on 01822 834610

Situated in beautiful savannah bush, close to clean and quiet beaches, Balaba offers guests a unique and special holiday, living in real African style.

Lamin Manneh owns and runs Balaba together with members of his extended family. If you stay for a while and relax into Balaba's tranquil atmosphere, you will soon become part of the family!

Accommodation is in simple huts built in the Jola style. They are equipped with bedding, mosquito nets and kerosene lamps. There is no electricity or running water. Toilets are of the local design. Showers are water from a bucket, best enjoyed under the evening stars!

A well provides water for washing. Bottled mineral water is always available for drinking. Fresh local fish is a speciality, cooked with organic vegetables and rice in a variety of regional styles.

The beach is a 20 minute walk away, across the main highway and through Medina Salaam, the local village.

Lamin is working hard to not only protect the local environment but also to educate local people in the need to conserve nature. The surrounding woodland holds many animals such as monkeys and monitor lizards but sightings become rarer as more of the natural habitat is destroyed.

Excursions can be organised to local villages, Brikama and Gunjur, the local fishing village.
